Telecom said today it is comfortable with the High Court reserving a decision on an interim injunction over interconnection arrangements for Internet company i4Free.

Telecom will continue to manage the situation under any conditions imposed by Justice Potter, said Greg McAlister, Manager, Industry Services. “Regrettably, we may at times be forced to apply controls on access to all Internet companies using our network management systems.

“The i4Free scheme, in association with Clear Communications (BT), is expected to continue putting huge pressure on the network at times, with overloading a definite risk,” Mr McAlister said.

“Clear and i4Free are deliberately trying to exploit a loophole in how the 0867 system is intended to work for the benefit of everyone in the Internet services market,” Mr McAlister said.

“Telecom totally supports the extension of choice in that market on a commercially and technically sustainable basis,” he said. “That choice certainly includes free access to the Internet although not under the scheme pursued by i4Free and Clear.”

Mr McAlister said Telecom looked forward to early resolution of the current situation and then to clarification on interconnection issues in context of the current Telecommunications Inquiry.

“We simply want to get on and manage the Telecom network for delivery of high quality service to as many customers as possible,” he said.
