Telecom will be helping communities to bridge the digital divide at a conference in the capital next week.
The Telecom Information Technology Roadshow will be offering free tuition on the internet to those gathered for the Flaxroots Technology conference.
The conference on April 17 and 18 aims to help communities claim their space on the internet. It has been organised by the Department of Internal Affairs, WINZ and a range of community organisations.
“The digital divide is the distance between those who are part of the digital revolution, and those who aren’t,” Telecom Government and Community Relations Advisor Janice Rodenburg said. “The speed of change could exceed the ability of some people and businesses to keep up. At Telecom, we believe our industry has a responsibility to help those who are most at risk of finding themselves on the wrong side of the digital divide.”
“Telecom is the second biggest funder of education in New Zealand after the Government, having donated $57 million over the last seven years through the Telecom Education Foundation,” Ms Rodenburg said.
“We are currently investing $12 million a year preparing people for life and work in the digital age, through a range of sponsorship programmes.
“The Telecom Information Technology Roadshow is one part of a programme of support which aims to help New Zealanders make the power of new technology work for them.”
The Roadshow is a mobile, self-contained classroom packed with new technology that tours the length of New Zealand, visiting over 40 communities each year.
The Telecom Information Technology Roadshow helps thousands of students, teachers and people in local communities to learn about the information revolution and communications technology.
