TELECOM EXAMINING EFFECTS FOR CUSTOMERS

Broadband customers will be better served by competition rather than regulation, Telecom said today.

The unbundling of broadband services is the key part of today’s recommendation from the Commerce Commission, said Bruce Parkes, General Manager Government & Industry Relations.

“The Government will have to work out what that would mean for customers in New Zealand’s growing broadband market. Any regulation in this area is terribly complex. When the Government makes its final decision it will have to assess whether any benefits outweigh the costs,” Mr Parkes said.

“Telecom will take a bit of time digesting this recommendation. The Commission has recognised the potential of new technologies to increase broadband competition in New Zealand. That’s good news for broadband customers and the companies that are building wireless networks.

“From our point of view, we’re pleased the Commission has taken notice of the offer we put on the table to deliver unbundled partial private circuits.

“The Commission has given the industry a six-month deadline to make that offer work – we’re totally committed to delivering on it.

“The Government has indicated in its statement today that it is going to work through a thorough process to make a final decision on this recommendation.

“We’ll certainly be going through the detail of the recommendation to look at what’s in the best long term interests of customers,” Mr Parkes said.
